Instant coffee, carbonated soft drinks, men and women’s t-shirts, nappies, rice, long-life UHT milk, cooking oil and televisions – these are some of the popular Black Friday buys at Pick n Pay.

The retailer reveals some of its popular purchases last Black Friday:
  • 23 million cups of coffee could have been made with instant coffee sold
  • 7,5 million meals could have been made with the amount of rice sold 
  • Enough TVs were sold on Black Friday to furnish almost all households in a small suburb 
  • Enough long-life UHT milk was sold to pave a path from Gqeberha to East London

Andrew Mills, Group Executive: Marketing at Pick n Pay, says that Black Friday in South Africa has evolved over the past few years. 

“When it first launched, many customers used it to snap up the latest TVs and gadgets. But shoppers are increasingly using the massive savings to stock up for the festive season or restock their pantry with everyday non-perishable items.

“Many stokvel groups also use our Black Friday deals for their year-end bulk buying season.”

When surveying Smart Shoppers ahead of Black Friday, 86% said they’d be hunting for great Black Friday deals this year. 29% of these shoppers said they’d focus on groceries deals while 27% were looking for appliance and electronic deals. 

18% plan on using the deals to get a head start on their Christmas shopping. The remaining Smart Shoppers (12%) are interested in clothing deals. 

Almost a third of Smart Shoppers surveyed said they’d be shopping deals online this Black Friday. 

Pick n Pay has made it possible for more customers to shop online this year. It’s asap! on-demand delivery app is offering same-day delivery from over 200 stores nationwide, and for bulk purchases customers can use its online shop. 

Pick n Pay today launched its Black Friday deals which will run until 28 November 2021 in stores and online.

Offering deals of up to 50% off, Pick n Pay says it has tailored deals to suit what customers want and need at the moment based on shopping trends. Deals will be offered on everyday items, such as food, liquor, toiletries and household products, as well as bigger ticket items such as appliances and electronics.

Pick n Pay’s nine million Smart Shoppers stand to gain the most this Friday. Many of the deals being offered are Smart Price Black Friday deals and customers will need to swipe their Smart Shopper card to qualify. 

Customers will then also receive cashback in points when swiping their cards. 

“Our shelves are stocked and we have increased the number of staff working in stores this weekend to unpack deals quickly. We continue to follow our safety measures to ensure a safe shopping environment for customers,” concludes Mills.
