Dr Margaret Venter, Stellenbosch-based radiation oncologist who now runs Enfold, a palliative care service and network for patients and families facing serious illness, was announced the winner of the Titanium Awards Excellence in Creating Access to Healthcare (Individuals) category during last night’s BHF-hosted virtual awards presentation ceremony.
This year’s awards project was adjusted specifically to recognise exceptional service during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Winner of the Excellence in Creating Access to Healthcare (Organisations) category was BestMed while Medscheme took the award for Service to Membership (Open, Closed and Self-Administered Medical Schemes, Administrator and Managed Care Organisations).
In the award citation, Dr Venter was highly commended for her long-standing belief in palliative care access and in the time of COVID-19, “her commitment to patients, her innate compassion, and her tireless energy” which has brought sharp relief to many.
Accepting the award (above), Dr Venter – who is also the current secretary and co-founder of the Association of Palliative Care Practitioners of South Africa – said she was particularly pleased with the badly-needed exposure this award had given to palliative care.
