The Hospital Association of SA (HASA) will host a special session at its upcoming conference on the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill that was tabled in Parliament earlier this month. The conference takes place from 26-28 August at the ICC in Cape Town.

To be held on the first day of the conference (26 August), the session will comprise a panel discussion that will kick off with a presentation by the Department of Health’s Deputy Director-General for the NHI, Dr Anban Pillay on the Bill. Joining Dr Pillay in the panel discussion, will be several leaders and experts in the private healthcare sector who will give their insights on the Bill and its expected far-reaching impact on the South African healthcare system.

Participants in the discussion to be moderated by the former CEO of Business Unity SA, Tanya Cohen include:

  • Dr Tebogo Phaleng (Discovery) and Dr Guni Goolab (GEMS) both come from the funder sector;
  • HASA Board member, Melanie Da Costa, who will provide a perspective from private hospitals;
  • Dr Mzukisi Grootboom, former SAMA Chair who will be representing healthcare professionals’s view.
  • Dr Terence Moodley, board member at the South African Medical Technology Industry Association (SAMED) and a representative from the pharmaceutical industry.

It is hoped that the discussion will provide conference delegates with the necessary insight and knowledge to fully participate in the public consultation process that is due to start soon before the President can approve the Bill and sign it into law.

The panel discussion will start at 13h00.
