Dr Nicholas Crisp

Dr Nicholas Crisp, recently tasked by the Department of Health to head up administration and operations of National Health Insurance during the implementation process, will preside at an open discussion on NHI – with particular emphasis on the role of health practitioners – at a forum to be convened by the Institute for Health Professionals (IHP) on Wednesday evening, 20 November, at the Willows Country Lodge in Pretoria East.

As pointed out by IHP forum convenor, Oscar de Meijer, in the event announcement, the NHI Bill has been looming on the horizon for more than a decade and most of what is known about it is gleaned from what one reads in the media: “Most often,” he adds, “this is skewed with polarised rhetoric depending on the vantage point from private as well as public camps.

“By accepting the invitation to participate, Dr Crisp,” de Meijer noted, “will provide a rare opportunity for doctors to discuss NHI issues first hand with an NHI authority and should therefore get a better understanding of the potential impact of NHI on them and their practices in the future.”

Proceedings, which have been awarded two ethical CPD points, will be facilitated by de Weijer and IHP colleague, author Dr Hlombe Makuluma.
